The Bark and heart wood of the Bija tree has the key ingredient- Pterostillbene- which has applications for treatment of diabetes, improving brain function and treatment of HIV. It is considered as the ‘drug of the future’. Bija is a fast-growing found in the Northern Western Ghats.
It is a globally threatened tree species, designated ‘Vulnerable’ in the IUCN Red List.
