The fruits of Sapindus laurifolia are known as soapnuts and contain saponins which are a natural surfactant. They are widely used for washing hair owing to its anti-bacterial and anti-fungal nature. Ritha is hypoallergenic, and is very safe to use for cleaning silk and traditional fabrics. The sustainable nature and versatility of soapnuts make them an important part of an Indian home.
